Hypnotic Brass Ensemble Thursday July 7th at The Great Hall @ 9pm

Craving a nice piece of brass?

Check out Chicago’s 8-brother brass band Hypnotic Brass Ensemble tomorrow night at The Great Hall at 9pm. You may have heard the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble from their previous collaborations with London’s indie deelites Golden Silvers and Essex’s weirdo hip-hoppers Gorillaz.

I fell in love with this Golden Silvers song a long time ago and the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble brings such a fresh feeling to it.

Of course, they’re also lovely on their own.

The concert, presented by World Famous Music and Fusicology Toronto, will also feature Daft Punk Tribute, a 9-piece band who reinterpret Daft Punk’s greatest with horns, rhythm, vocals, and electronics. One of the members, Ryan Spratt, specializes in “lazer noises”, so you know that’s going to be amusing.

DJ David Dacks, self-described creative rhythm specialist, will also spin a set. For a preview of his work, check him out every Thursday from 10PM to midnight on CIUT 89.5FM.

I’m ready for summer

With all the weird weather we’ve been having, this new wave of sunshine is exactly what I was waiting for.  Here is a playlist to kick start the summer, reveal the new blog design, and celebrate MUSIC BETWEEN FRIENDS being added as an Off The Grid blog for Toronto’s new mega-website THE GRID.

Katie and I have been contributing to the blog for over a year now and what started as a venue for us to share songs/bands that we were listening to among friends, is now looking like a real music blog.  Kind of?  Anyways, this playlist has some personal classics as well as new songs from bands I’m loving right now like Cults and Sleigh Bells.

01 The Shins - Sleeping Lessons
02 Gorillaz - Pirate Jet
03 Timber Timbre - Until the Night is Over
04 Sleigh Bells - Kids
05 The Kills - Future Starts Slow
06 The Strokes - Two Kinds of Happiness
07 The Beatles - Happiness is a Warm Gun
08 Mark Ronson and the Business Int'l - Somebody to Love Me
09 Vampire Weekend - I'm Going Down
10 Discovery - So Insane
11 Morrissey- I Don't Mind if you Forget Me
12 Wye Oak - The Altar
13 Cults - Most Wanted
14 TV Girl (DirtyGold cover) - OverBoard
15 MGMT - Pieces of What

Atlas Sound, Gorillaz’s xx cover, and Art Acoustic

A couple of tracks for you today. First, Green Glass Bottles by Atlas Sound, which starts off while it’s already winding down. Much like a wheezing toy that picks up speed as you twist its mechanisms, Green Glass Bottles finds its way about a minute or so in. It sounds a lot like another track that I’ve heard recently from the CFMU comp cd Everybody Dance Now: Songs from Hamilton Vol. 5, but I’ll have to go grab that to remember the name.

Next is Crystalized by Gorillaz, a cover of the xx.

Finally, Lay Your Head by Art Acoustic is a soft, sweet combination of electronic keyboards and acoustic guitars. I can imagine them being picked to wash over the scene of a couple's long-lost reunion on the beach, silent seagulls smashing into each other overhead (they're always silent in movies, for some reason).

Well now, since I’m disgustingly late for work, I’m going to jet off and leave you to mull over these tracks!
