Katie’s NXNE Picks – Wednesday June 17th

nxne 1

Tonight, I sat down to figure out what I’m going to see for NXNE and I realized that if I tried to cram everything into a single post, it would never load and I would never finish. So I’m going to post my favourites one day at a time.

☯ WEDNESDAY JUNE 17th ☯

8pm – Holiday Rambler (Toronto) – distant, devotional, blues

D. Alex Meeks is one of my favourite people in Toronto. He plays in Hooded Fang and a handful of other bands, plus he’s incredibly sweet and interesting. His music is hymnal, filled with stories, and deeply affecting. He’s playing Smiling Buddha with Moonwood (Toronto), Clara Engel (Toronto), and Khora (Toronto’s Matthew Ramolo).

8pm – Blonde Elvis (Toronto) – handclapping, psych

Blonde Elvis are a real treat to see play live. We just did a show with them for Feast In The East and they were easily the most danceable set of the night. Their new song is such an earworm. You might want to turn the volume on your speakers down a bit if you just played that Holiday Rambler track.

They’re playing Horseshoe Tavern at 8pm with psych king Jacco Gardner (Hoorne, Netherlands), Moon King (Toronto) and Lower Dens (Baltimore). Jacco Gardner makes straight-up baroque pop.

8pm – Etiquette (Toronto) – dusky, electronic

Julie Fader & Graham Walsh of Holy Fuck came out with a new sultry electronic music project and released their debut, Reminisce, on Hand Drawn Dracula. They’re playing Danforth Music Hall with Glass Animals and Son Lux.

9pm – ANAMAI (Toronto) – slowcore, folk

Toronto’s Anna Mayberry from HSY plays with Egyptrixx’s David Psutka in ANAMAI. They just came out with a new album, Sallows, on Buzz Records and they’ll be playing Opera House with Blonde Redhead.

8pm – Tasseomancy (Toronto) – herbal, folk, pop

Sisters Romy and Sari have the best fashion sense, are incredible musicians and vocalists, and their drummer Evan Cartwright is, a) a total sweetheart, and b) great at steel pans. Johnny Spence on keys and sax adds so much flavour. They’re playing Mod Club with Ibeyi. Support these magic women!

11pm – DOOMSQUAD (Toronto) – experimental, deep, dance

Toronto siblings Jaclyn, Allie, and Trevor Blumas started dabbling in making dark, addictive tonics. They’re playing Lee’s Palace at with Programm. If you want to catch them again, they’re playing the Sonic Boom Record Fair (which I’ll be running the Weird Canada table for, so feel free to come say hi).

11pm – Jessica Pratt (Los Angeles) – lovesick, folk

She’s playing two shows, but I bet the Pitchfork session is going to be clogged. Check her out at The Garrison on Wednesday instead – she has a voice like melted honey and some seriously good fingerpicking. Insert obligatory comparisons to Sibylle Baier, blah blah blah. Her album On Your Own Love Again is one of the best of 2015, and consistently spinning on my record player once a week.

Okay, stay tuned for Thursday’s pick! If there’s anyone I’m missing, let me know in the comments below.

This week in Toronto concerts

If you’re like me, you’ll notice that local concert listings come in ebb and flows. Some weeks, there won’t be much going on, whereas other weeks leave me lacking any clean clothes and groceries, tending to dead houseplants, and applying girl goo on my permanent undereye circles (lack of sleep? or my inability to remove mascara?).

This week, there’s plenty to do! So please, stock up on Doritos from your local 7/11 so that you don’t end up impulse-buying Sweet Chili Heat. Gross!

MONDAY

KETAMINES Everyone knows how much I love these garagepop fuckers, but rather than waxing poetic for the zillionth time, just press play. I forced Paul to become my friend (hi Paul) so that stalking him would be more convenient (I’m in your house, are those curtains new?)

BRAVE RADAR A similar vibe to Freelove Fenner, but with male vocals!

Also featuring JEANS, members of New Fries and Weaves.
