It’s my 25th birthday. Here are my favourite 25 songs of 2013!

25ohno

i’ll never be this kewt again

In no particular order, here are my favourite 25 tracks from 2013. You may have heard some of them on my radio show or seen them featured on the blog. These songs make me so happy to belong to the musical community of the Y generation – such wonderfully multi-faceted, dynamic, creative, hardworking individuals who deserve so much credit for what they’ve accomplished with limited resources and heavy competition. It’s so easy to sit back and press play and make a judgement call about a track without thinking about the hours of songwriting, recording, mixing, merchandising, marketing, social media maintenance, negotiations, legalities, and frugalities associated with the entire process. I’m guilty of doing that all the time. Judging art is a by-product of cultural over-saturation – there’s so much creative content available on the internet that music consumers are required to flip through files quickly as per our taste preferences to see what we want to sink our teeth into. Sometimes great tracks can pass you by.

It’s incredible to think that the music we listen to at vulnerable moments translates into an immeasurable, significant impact on the person you grow up to become. Thank god for cool roommates, good friends, and weird boyfriends who turned me onto new bands when I was in the midst of post-teenage angst and university study sessions. All of these tracks are all a part of me – they’re my birthday gift to you, dear reader. If you find a new favourite track, that will make me the happiest birthday girl in the world.

New apartment

So here’s what’s been happening lately. My new apartment is adorable but absolutely filthy. I found a fossilized cockroach in the cutlery drawer and the toilet smells like old poo. Please note that this is not a personal attribute which I have bestowed on the apartment – I poop rainbows and fairy dust in the sunlit barn where Taylor Swift was foaled. Obviously. Sometimes I see her clomping around singing into a currycomb while feathering her forelocks.

Since moving in last weekend, I have been up to my eyeballs in a medley of  grime and unsavouries, scraping dirty grout, bleaching sinks, sweeping mouse turdlettes into dustbins, and slopping cracked and mouldy cupboards with a thick layer of paint. Actual sweat has been trickling from my armpits. I am a lady (ladies perspire!!) so this is a new phenomenon for me. Of course, I sweat when I run, but it feels strange to drip like a faucet while simultaneously mopping the floor.

I guess you’ll want to see pictures at this point, so here we go:

The best thing about moving is the feeling that things are about to happen. A fresh slate. A clean break. Here favourite new releases to celebrate a brand new start in the heart of Parkdale. Cheers.

Get Stroked- Stereogum Pays Tribute to This is It with a Collection of Covers

Stereogum has released an album of covers to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Is This It.  You can download the compilation here with covers from bands like Peter, Bjorn & John, Wise Blood, and The Morning Benders.  Is This It is an album that holds a lot of nostalgia for me.  I remember the first time I heard Hard to Explain and pressing record after the intro, not even caring that I was cutting into the mixed tape already in the boombox. Even though the covers don’t compare to my sentiment with the originals, this is still a fun listen for me.

Track Listing

01 Peter Bjorn And John – “Is This It”
02 Chelsea Wolfe – “The Modern Age”
03 Frankie Rose – “Soma”

07 the morning benders – “Last Night”
08 Owen Pallett – “Hard To Explain”
