Katie’s NXNE Picks – Friday June 19th

nxne3

If you missed them, here are my NXNE favourites for Wed June 17th and Thursday June 18th.

In terms of sheer volume of acts, Friday is pretty sparse compared to Wednesday and Thursday. However, there are some really great gems; Smiling Buddha and Lee’s Palace would make for two amazing standalone concerts if you want to stay put.

☯ FRIDAY JUNE 19th ☯

9pm – Foxes In Fiction (Brooklyn) dreamscape, abstract / 11pm – Doldrums (Toronto) experimental dance, manic pop

Ex-Ontario resident Warren Hildebrand got Owen Pallett to play violin on this album. It’s a dreamy, ambient trek into memory and mourning. I’ve been loving Doldrums new album The Air Conditioned Nightmare, which is a dance hall lobotomy. Check them both out at Lee’s Palace.

(PREPARE TO HAVE YOUR BRAIN SHREDDED A TINY BIT IF YOU JUST PLAYED THAT FOXES IN FICTION TRACK)

11pm – DIANA (Toronto) – electronic, indie pop

I really wish that someone had thought to put Doldrums and DIANA on the same bill, as there’s a really great Doldrums remix of one of their songs, which I will post below. Instead, they’re playing Adelaide Hall, which would still be a really great place to hear them.

10:15pm – Fat As Fuck (Toronto) – instrumental, brain melt

Toronto’s Fat As Fuck are playing 159 Manning, which is great, because it’s probably going to destroy that house.

2am – AMERICAN WRESTLERS (St. Louis, Missouri) – sprightly bedroom pop

Gary McClure’s project sound like an Americanized version of Phoenix, and that’s not a bad thing. They’ll be playing Horseshoe Tavern at 2am if you’re up for a late night dance party.

***GO TO THIS****

9:45pm Homebody (Denver) – avante-pop / 1am – Chastity Belt (Seattle) – feminist punk with pop undercurrents / 1:45am – Old and Weird (Halifax) – avante-pop / 3am – DJ Garbage Body (SHE RULES)

Denver’s Homebody put out an awesome album this month via Heretical Objects, and they make great no-wave art pop. Seattle’s Chastity Belt make throaty, thoughtful art punk. Halifax’s Old and Weird are a fan favourite, bringing bizarre, clashing, confusing elements to avante-pop. Stick around for DJ Garbage Body because Julie Reich (Bile Sister) is a fucking rad babe.

Alright chickens, I should probably peel my skin from the couch and make something useful of myself.
