Fiery Furnaces was one of my first tastes of indie music. And what a taste – in real life, it would be like biting into a tart raspberry nestled inside a crunchy, bumpy candy coating, bobbing in a fizzing can of orange soda. Strange, but addictive. And certainly not what you’d expect.
Blueberry Boat, the opening track from the spectacularly experimental album of the same name, takes the listener through a sea shanty ballad that sounds absolutely nothing like a sea shanty. Blueberry Boat also carries the Fiery Furnaces’ trademark of blending several completely different songs seamlessly together to create one mammoth song.
Final thoughts: Who dedicates their entire boat to shipping blueberries anyways? Whatever, I’m down for crewmanship.
